England's oldest competitor pleased with start to Commonwealth Games

Mixed doubles lawn bowls competitor Doreen Flanders reflects on her first taste of Commonwealth Games action with delight.

Doreen Flanders, Team England's oldest Commonwealth Games competitor, has reflected on her first lawn bowls match at the competition with great joy.

The 79-year-old secured a 17-13 victory against much-fancied Australia earlier today with mixed-doubles partner Steve Simmons.

"That was brilliant, it was going one for one and we were keeping level but we got four in one end with edged us ahead and gave us the cushion we needed," Flanders said.

"Australia are one of the top nations so to beat them it is a real scalp and a fantastic start to our campaign."

The triumph secured a clean sweep for England in the event following wins for Natalie Melmore, Andrew Knapper and Sam Tolchard in the singles, along with victories for the women's fours and men's triples side.
