Fellow Italian Andrea Iannone took second, with Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa taking third.
Marc Marquez, who has already been crowned this season's world champion, will start from fifth position, one place behind Rossi's Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo.
