The ashes of Canadian skier Sarah Burke have been spread around Sochi by her coach Trennon Paynter and husband Rory Bushfield.

Paynter spread the ashes in the village of Rosa Khutor - at the highest point in the mountains there and in the half-pipe prior to the start of competition at the Winter Olympics.

Paynter told the Toronto Star: "That was a little bit of a stealth mission. I feel pretty good about knowing Sarah was all over these Olympics in our hearts and quite literally too."

Burke died as a result of injuries sustained in a training accident in 2012.

She had pushed to get freestyle skiing events included in the Olympic Games before her death.
