EFL satisfied with Derby County, Cardiff City postponement

Derby County were justified in calling off their Championship clash with Cardiff City on Sunday, according to English Football League chiefs.

The English Football League has accepted Derby County's reasoning behind postponing Sunday's Championship match with Cardiff City.

A decision was made a little over three hours before the midday kickoff to call off the game due to safety concerns.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock was furious with the decision, suggesting that underhand tactics were at play as Derby - with a number of key men missing through injury - forced the cancellation of the fixture despite minimal snow around Pride Park.

EFL chiefs say that the County had every right to postpone the game, though, with a statement reading: "The decision to postpone the fixture between Derby County and Cardiff City was made first thing this morning following discussions between Derby County, Derbyshire Police and the local Safety Advisory Group (SAG).

"It was taken in the interests of spectator safety following heavy overnight snow falling in the Derby area which had built up on the roads surrounding the stadium. Cardiff City were informed of the decision and the reasons behind it as soon as it was reached.

"An announcement was made at 8.30am and the EFL is satisfied from the information shared that these were the reasons the match was postponed & will provide Cardiff City with the opportunity to provide any additional information they feel is relevant, before responding further."

Cardiff now face the prospect of playing three away games in a row after the international break.
