Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has been handed a six-month driving ban for failing to respond to letters from the police.

The Argentina international pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to provide information regarding incidents of speeding but the frontman's solicitor Gwyn Lewis claimed that the 28-year-old did not understand the word "constabulary" on the official letters.

"He does understand the word 'police', but not more complicated words," said Mr Lewis during a hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court, according to PA.

"The letters are written from Cheshire Constabulary and the word police doesn't appear on it anywhere. The word constabulary is not one that is recognised internationally, but of course police is."

Tevez has also been ordered to pay fines and costs of £1,540.
