Sir Alex Ferguson to receive honorary freedom of Trafford borough

Sir Alex Ferguson will receive the freedom of Trafford in October following his 26-year stint as Manchester United manager.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will been given the freedom of Trafford following his 26-year stint with the North-West football club.

The Scotsman, who is expected to be handed the honour on October 14, will also receive a tribute in the form of a road name, as Waters Reach Road near to Old Trafford will be renamed Sir Alex Ferguson Way.

"When I arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 I had little idea of the journey that awaited me," BBC Sport quotes Ferguson as saying.

"Over quarter of a century later, to receive the Freedom of the Borough of Trafford and to have a part of Trafford carrying my name is truly humbling."

Ferguson is also preparing to take on a book tour in the same month to promote his new autobiography.
