Petra Kvitova has said that she "is shaken but fortunate to be alive" after sustaining knife wounds to her hand during a burglary at her home in the Czech Republic.
The incident - which occurred on Tuesday morning - has left Kvitova with injuries to the tendons in her left hand - her dominant hand in tennis - and the two-time Wimbledon champion has revealed that the wounds to the area are "severe".
On social media, the 26-year-old said: "Thank you for all your messages. As you may have already heard, today I was attacked in my apartment by an individual with a knife.
"In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand. I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive. The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists but if you know anything about me, I am strong and I will fight this. Thank you again for your love and support."
The burglary came just hours after Kvitova pulled out of next month's Hopman Cup with a foot injury.
