Oscar Pistorius 'to be released from jail next week after serving 10 months'

Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius will reportedly be released from jail next week after serving 10 months of a five-year sentence for killing his girlfriend.

Six-time Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius will reportedly be released from a South African prison next week after spending 10 months behind bars for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The double amputee was jailed for five years in October last year after shooting dead his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria in the early hours of Valentine's Day 2013.

According to The Independent, the parole board at Kgosi Mampuru II prison has recommended that the athlete be granted early release, despite Pistorius himself not applying for it.

It is believed that the 28-year-old, who avoided a murder conviction and was instead found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter), will be freed from jail on Friday, August 21.

"He's behaving himself very well," said prison service national commissioner Zach Modise.

During the trial, Pistorius claimed that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four gunshots through a toilet door.

In November, prosecutors will try to convince a judge to change the conviction to murder, which could result in a 15-year prison term for the Paralympian.
