Oscar Pistorius 'to be sentenced for murder in June'

Former Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius will reportedly be sentenced for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp in June.

Former Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius is expected to learn his sentence for murdering Reeva Steenkamp in June.

The 29-year-old was initially convicted of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, after claiming that he shot his girlfriend through a bathroom door because he thought she was an intruder.

However, South Africa's Court of Appeal overturned that decision in December, upgrading the crime to murder.

PA now reports that the South African's agent Peet van Zyl has said that he expects sentencing to take place from June 13 to June 17.

The minimum punishment for murder in South Africa is 15 years, although that can be lowered in exceptional circumstances.

Pistorius served less than a year of his original five-year sentence for manslaughter and was due to complete the rest under house arrest, which is likely to be considered when the sentence is decided.
