Helen Grant denies 'feminine' comment

British sports and equalities minister Helen Grant denies suggesting that women should try to take up sport through cheerleading.

British sports and equalities minister Helen Grant has denied suggesting that women should try to take up sport through 'feminine' pursuits such as cheerleading.

Grant had said, in an interview with The Telegraph that women should look to cheerleading and ballet in order to feel more involved in sports.

Speaking at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, she told reporters: "I was specifically asked the question about what I, as the minister, was going to do about the girls who say they don't want to do sport because they see it as 'unfeminine'.

"Those were not my words. My response then, and my response now, is very much that sport is for everyone.

"Sport has something for everyone. That is the point I have been trying to make."

Great Britain have won four medals at the 2014 Games.
