Two-time Olympic medallist Caitlin Cahow has said that she is in not in Sochi to present a case for the gay, lesbian and transgender (LGBT) community.
The Winter Olympics in the Russian city has come under fire for the country's controversial law that bans 'gay propaganda'.
However, Cahow, who is openly lesbian and is part of the US delegation chosen by President Barack Obama for the Sochi Games, insists that she is representing all Americans and not just the LGBT community.
"I think I want to represent all Americans, you know? Not just one community," the 28-year-old told 90.9WBUR. "At the same time, I'm very proud to be representing the LGBT community.
"I think it's really just an honour in every possible way. But, more importantly, I really identify with what Brian Boitano has said about his life, you know? He's not just gay. He's never thought of himself that way.
"That's the same way that I am. I'm a daughter and a sister and a student and an athlete and an Olympian and an American. And it's just one more thing that makes up who I am."
The opening ceremony of the Winter Games in Sochi was held at Fisht Olympic Stadium on Friday.
