West Midlands Police have confirmed that they have launched an investigation after Wolverhampton Wanderers fans encroached the pitch at Molineux yesterday.
Fans ran on to the pitch following the final whistle at Wolves' 2-1 loss to Burnley, damaging advertising hoardings and the dug-outs, verbally abusing players and assaulting at least one steward.
Inspector Richard Cox said: "The encroachment of the pitch by approximately 300 Wolves supporters was a disappointing end to an otherwise exciting and trouble-free game.
"In the coming days officers will be working with club officials to explore how people were able to evade security and get on to the pitch."
The club said in a statement: "The club will work with West Midlands Police to review all the footage relating to the post-match events."
The result has left Wolves inside the Championship relegation zone with one game left to play.
