Michael Hooper named Australia captain

Michael Hooper takes over from the injured Stephen Moore as captain of Australia.

Australia have confirmed that Michael Hooper will take over as captain from the injured Stephen Moore.

Moore was ruled out for the rest of the season at the weekend after suffering a serious knee problem during the Wallabies' 50-23 victory over France in Brisbane.

Waratahs flanker Hooper, 22, will now lead the side for their remaining two Tests against the French.

"It's a massive honour to captain your country and I'm confident Michael has all the right leadership qualities to lead this team moving forward," Australia coach Ewen McKenzie is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"He'll undoubtedly bring his own unique personality to the way things are done but we wouldn't have recognised him in a leadership capacity at the beginning of this series if we didn't think he had to the ability to step into this role."

Hooper has won 29 caps for Australia since making his debut two years ago.
