Tom Wood happy England have come through France test

Tom Wood admits that it was "important to win" after England held on to beat France in their first World Cup warm-up match.

England captain Tom Wood has admitted that his side were made to battle hard for their win against France this evening.

The World Cup hosts beat the visitors 19-14 at Twickenham in their first warm-up match thanks to two tries from winger Anthony Watson.

France pushed hard late on, but England managed to hang on and win.

Wood told Sky Sports News: "It was important to win in front of our home fans. France are renowned for their tough play and have a heavy pack.

"We dug in and gave as good as we got. When you're doing hard work as forwards and you see your wings running in like that it's exactly what you need."

England travel to Paris for a second game between the sides next week.
