Georgia head coach Milton Haig targets Argentina scalp

Georgia head coach Milton Haig tells Sports Mole that he hopes his side's victory over Tonga can act as a springboard to success ahead of their meeting with Argentina.

Georgia head coach Milton Haig has suggested that his side's victory over Tonga in their opening Rugby World Cup contest could give them the confidence to challenge for qualification from Pool C.

Pre-tournament predictions had the European side finishing fourth in the group, but a surprise 17-10 victory over Tonga at Kingsholm this afternoon has put them in pole position to challenge New Zealand and Argentina for the two qualification berths.

The Pumas are next up for Georgia on Friday, and while acknowledging that the South American outfit are a step up in class, Haig insisted that anything could happen on the day.

When asked whether the victory could be used as a springboard for success against Argentina, Haig told Sports Mole: "I'd like that! There is still a pretty big obstacle, but it gave us a lot of confidence today.

"It gives us a bit of momentum, a bit of self-belief, and on the day when a team has got a bit of self-belief and confidence, when the bounce of the ball goes their way, referee's decision, who knows what can happen?

"We've given the day off tomorrow to the boys. We'll front up Monday, prepare well for Argentina and we'll see what we can do."

Next up for Georgia after Argentina is a clash with defending champions and tournament favourites New Zealand, before taking on Namibia in their final group game.
