Joe Schmidt "hopeful" after Rob Kearney injury

Joe Schmidt reveals that he is "hopeful" Rob Kearney will make a swift recovery from the knock he picked up in Ireland's 44-10 win over Romania.

Head coach Joe Schmidt has played down the knock picked up by Rob Kearney in Ireland's 44-10 victory over Romania at Wembley.

Six tries were scored by Ireland in a comfortable win as they moved one point ahead of France at the top of Pool D, but there was cause for concern when Kearney, who came off the bench to register a try in the second half, appeared to injure his hip before going off.

Schmidt admitted that the full-back "jarred himself up a bit", but he is optimistic that he will recover ahead of next Sunday's meeting with Italy.

"Hopeful Rob Kearney will be OK. We'll give a better picture tomorrow or Tuesday but [we are] hopeful," he told reporters.

Ireland and Scotland are the only two sides to take maximum points from their opening two fixtures.
