A quiet start to the match saw Scotland edge ahead through two Greig Laidlaw penalties, before Tim Visser crossed the whitewash just before the half-hour mark to give the hosts a 13-3 lead at the break.

The teams were well matched in the opening 20 minutes, but Scotland soon started to dominate, forcing mistakes from the Italians.

Scotland extended their lead with a strong showing after the break, Matt Scott and Stuart Hogg both adding tries inside the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

The pace of the game took its toll on both sides midway through the second period, but a number of replacements helped refresh the hosts, with Sean Lamont adding their fourth try of the day.

Alessandro Zanni went over with six minutes left to play to score a consolation try for Italy, who finished the match strongly but were too late to launch a comeback.
