Montpellier flanker Johnnie Beattie says that moving to France has improved him as a player.

Montpellier flanker Johnnie Beattie has admitted that he is pleased with his recent form having secured a return to the international setup with Scotland.

The 27-year-old, who moved to France last summer, is with his international squad this week as they prepare for the Six Nations, but a succession of injuries has thus far stunted his ability to train.

"To be pushing for an international spot, you need to be pushing yourself and showing form. So far, I think I've done that," he told BBC Sport.

"The move has helped because I'm playing regularly. I've played in the last eight or nine games, getting 80 minutes. There are a few differences in lifestyle, the weather makes a massive difference, but rugby is much of a muchness.

"I'd say there is more pressure to perform in France. The public are rugby-daft. It's a much bigger sport and just about every game is on television."

Beattie has not played for his country since 2011.
