Warren Gatland "optimistic" over Liam Williams World Cup return

Warren Gatland admits that it is "too early" to put a specific timescale on Liam Williams's return from foot surgery, with just three months to go until the World Cup.

Wales head coach Warren Gatland has stressed that he expects Liam Williams to play a part in this autumn's Rugby World Cup, despite facing up to 10 weeks on the sidelines.

The full-back underwent surgery on Wednesday to rectify a foot complaint, making him a major doubt for the showpiece competition which gets underway in mid-September.

However, Gatland insists that he remains "optimistic" 23-time capped Williams will be ready in time to play a part for Wales.

"Maybe he'll be back for the Italy week," Gatland is quoted as saying by the South Wales Evening Post. "We'll have to make a call and see how he recovers. It's too early. He's only had the operation yesterday. But I am optimistic, yes."

Wales were rocked last month by the news that centre Jonathan Davies will miss the World Cup with an injury problem of his own.
