Ronnie O'Sullivan: 'Welsh Open venue in Cardiff is like a shopping mall'

Ronnie O'Sullivan criticises the venue of the Welsh Open by describing the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff as like a "shopping mall".

Defending Welsh Open champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has described the competition's venue in Cardiff as like a "shopping mall".

The 39-year-old criticised the Motorpoint Arena, which is hosting the event for the first time since 2003, after he secured a 4-1 victory over Vinnie Calabrese.

"It's like playing in a shopping mall," O'Sullivan told BBC Sport. "There were people walking around and getting up when they wanted. The etiquette of snooker is not to move when a player is on his shot."

For the last nine years, the Newport Centre hosted the competition, but World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn decided to move venues to accommodate 128 players.

O'Sullivan went on to beat Rory McLeod 4-2 in the second round.
