Snooker has failed to make the shortlist for potential sports at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, while karate and surfing remain a possibility.
The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association had hoped that worldwide appeal would boost the sport's chances, but it missed out, along with chess, netball and bowls.
The eight sports that made the shortlist are baseball and softball, bowling, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, squash, surfing and wushu.
The federations of these sports will progress to the second round of the application process, but a final decision will not be made until August 2016.
Other sports to miss out include American football, tug of war and sumo.
