Fu Yuanhui wins 50m backstroke World gold, GB's Lauren Quigley misses medal

China's Fu Yuanhui takes gold in the 50m backstroke final at the World Championships, while Great Britain's Lauren Quigley fails to medal.

China's Fu Yuanhui has met expectations by winning gold in the 50m backstroke final in a time of 27.11s at the World Championships in Kazan.

The 19-year-old was neck and neck with Brazil's Etiene Medeiros at the halfway stage, but Fu was able to steal the gold ahead of her opponent, who settled for silver.

Great Britain's representative Lauren Quigley, placed in lane one, struggled to keep up with the leaders as she finished seventh in 27.99s.

Fu's compatriot Liu Xiang swam to bronze.
