United States swimmer Tyler Clary has opened up about his victory over teammate Ryan Lochte in the men's 200m backstroke.

The 23-year-old trailed the pre-event favourite for much of the race, but powered through the final length to clock up an Olympic record time of 1:53.41 and bag the gold medal.

"It was not how I planned the race playing at all, but I stuck to my gameplan and it worked out for me," BBC Sport quotes Clary as saying.

"You always think of having a result like that, but when it happens it is pretty incredible."

Lochte appeared to run out of steam when it mattered most, falling behind at the death to missing out on silver to Japan's Ryosuke Irie.

However, the 27-year-old's time of 1:53.94 was good enough for third place and a bronze medal.
