Nathan Adrian edges out James Magnussen for freestyle gold

Nathan Adrian beats James Magnussen by one hundredth of a second to win gold in the 100m freestyle in London.

American Nathan Adrian has claimed gold in the 100m freestyle ahead of favourite James Magnussen.

Adrian and Australian Magnussen could hardly be separated throughout the race and it was clear that the title would be awarded to one of the two competitors.

Despite being out of form heading into the final, Magnussen was still in contention to win gold until the final moments but Adrian was able to just beat his rival with a time of 47.52s.

Magnussen finished one hundredth of a second behind his opponent - the minimum difference a race can be won by - with Canada's Brent Hayden taking the bronze medal.
