Fernando Verdasco outlasts David Goffin to set up a meeting with Xavier Malisse in the second round of the Australian Open.

Fernando Verdasco has come from 2-1 behind to survive a first-round scare against David Goffin.

The Belgian made 13 unforced errors on his way to dropping the first set 6-3, but found his rhythm in the second as he levelled the score at 1-1.

Verdasco was still hitting the powerful forehands that are a trademark of his game, but the 22-year-old's counter-punching had him on the run.

The pair exchanged early breaks in the third set, but it was Goffin who managed to edge by breaking at 4-3.

He then served out for the set and a shock was now on the cards.

Verdasco dug deep in the fourth set as the unforced errors from both men continued to stack up. It was at that point when the momentum shifted and the 22nd seed was able to set up a decider.

Experience prevailed as Verdasco made the decisive break in the fourth game of the final set, before going on to serve for victory.

He will now play Xavier Malisse in the second round.
