Andy Murray will face Fernando Verdasco in the second round of the Paris Masters in a week where he hopes to become world number one.

Andy Murray has been drawn to face Fernando Verdasco in the second round of the Paris Masters.

On Sunday, the British number one defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Erst Bank Open final to give himself a chance of becoming world number one for the first time.

To do so, Murray must win the tournament in the French capital and hope that Novak Djokovic fails to make the final of the last Masters Series event of 2016.

Verdasco reached the last 32 after benefiting from opponent Robin Haase retiring from their first-round clash with the Spaniard 6-3 3-2 to the good.

Murray holds an 11-1 record against the left-hander but they have only played three times in seven years.
