Marin Cilic eases into last eight of China Open

Joao Sousa fails to overcome world number nine Marin Cilic, losing out 6-3 6-3 at the China Open.

Marin Cilic has defeated Joao Sousa in straight sets to book his place in the quarter-finals of the China Open.

The world number nine made light work of his opponent in Beijing to prevail 6-3 6-3 in a time of one hour and 12 minutes this afternoon.

The opening set remained tight until the eighth game when Cilic earned a break of serve to take control, eventually seeing it out despite blowing three set points.

Sousa lost serve in the opening game of the second set, and Cilic did not look back as he saw the match out to book his place in the last eight.

Pablo Cuevas or Mikhail Kukushkin await the Croatian pro in the next round.
