Jo-Wilfried Tsonga progresses to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 over Fernando Verdasco.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 win over Spain's Fernando Verdasco.

Verdasco claimed the first set, requiring one break of serve to go ahead in the match.

Tsonga responded strongly in the second, not allowing his opponent a single break point before prevailing 6-3 to take the match to a third and final set.

In the final set Verdasco struggled to keep up with Tsonga, who opened up a 4-0 advantage with some impressive attacking play.

Verdasco then won two games but Tsonga sealed victory with an ace to take the final set 6-2.

He will now face either Grigor Dimitrov or Stanislas Wawrinka for a place in the semi-finals.
