Petra Kvitova obliterates Svetlana Kuznetsova to clinch Madrid Open title

Petra Kvitova records a straight-sets victory over compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova to win the Madrid Open title.

Petra Kvitova has won this year's Madrid Open title after hammering compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1 6-2 in a one-sided final.

The Czech followed her surprise win over Serena Williams in the semi-finals with a near-flawless victory to secure her second success in the Spanish capital.

Kuznetsova looked far from match fit, prone to unforced errors throughout, and Kvitova took full advantage by wrapping up the opening set inside 27 minutes.

The eventual runner-up was forced to take a medical timeout while trailing 3-0 in the second set, and the writing was very much on the wall.

She denied Kvitova a repeat of the first-set scoreline by clawing a game back at the death, but the 25-year-old went on to serve out the match and lift the Madrid Open title for the second time in her career.
