Kyle Edmund has admitted that he surprised even himself with his performance to pull off the biggest win of his career against Richard Gasquet in the opening round of the US Open.
The 21-year-old Briton beat the former semi-finalist 6-2 6-3 6-3 at Flushing Meadows to set up a meeting with American wildcard Ernesto Escobedo.
Edmund lost serve just once in the straight-sets triumph in New York, being edged out in the third game of the third set before quickly recovering with five games on the bounce to claim a major scalp.
"I played really well, went about my process and didn't really worry about who I was playing," Edmund told Eurosport. "I probably played better than I expected today.
"I always know in best-of-five sets there's up and downs and I was obviously riding a high until I got broken in the third set. When I broke him at 3-2, I thought I'd really push it home and take it to him."
British number one Andy Murray gets his US Open campaign under way on Tuesday, while Johanna Konta takes on American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the early hours of the morning.
