The third rain shower of the day forces matches involving Maria Sharapova and David Ferrer to be suspended at the US Open in New York.

The rain has suspended play at the US Open for a third time this evening.

As a result, Maria Sharapova's quarter-final encounter against Marion Bartoli and David Ferrer's round four match with Richard Gasquet have been stopped for the time being.

It is the second time today that these four players have been forced to leave the court because of the wet conditions.

Showers are expected to continue throughout the remainder of the day, which in turn will see the remaining matches pushed back to a later time.
