Serena Williams "excited" by first-round victory

Serena Williams says that she was left "excited" after beating former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in the first round of the US Open.

World number one Serena Williams has expressed her excitement after her first-round victory at the US Open on Monday.

The American thumped former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-0 6-1 at Flushing Meadows.

Williams is delighted having breezed past a potentially tricky draw against the former Grand Slam winner.

"I'm really excited," Williams told reporters.

"I knew playing a former Grand Slam champion the first round was a tough draw so I just tried to be super serious.

"In this sport you never know what can happen. That's why you have to enjoy every moment, enjoy every win."

Williams will face Galina Voskoboeva in the second round.
