David Ferrer moves into US Open third round by beating Roberto Bautista-Agut

David Ferrer has beaten compatriot Roberto Bautista-Agut in the second round of the US Open to book his place in the next stage of the competition.

David Ferrer has secured his place in the third round of the US Open by beating fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Agut.

The world number five, who was a beaten semi-finalist to Novak Djokovic at Flushing Meadows 12 months ago, claimed an early advantage by coasting into a 6-3 win in the opening set.

The world number 54 refused to make it easy for his compatriot though, as the 24-year-old twice recovered from a two-game deficit to set up a tie-break, before winning 7-6 to level matters.

However, the resurgence appeared to be short-lived, as Ferrer claimed the third set 6-1, before sealing his passage to the next round with a 6-2 win in the fourth set.
