Eugenie Bouchard knocked out by Ekaterina Makarova

Russia's Ekaterina Makarova knocks seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard out of the US Open to reach the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.

Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard has been knocked out of the US Open in straight sets, losing 7-6 6-4 to Russia's Ekaterina Makarova this evening.

The seventh seed fought back from a break down in the first set to force the opener to tie-break, but the Canadian made a string of errors to hand her opponent the set.

Bouchard lost her serve again early in the second, but once again pulled it back to keep herself in contention.

However, Makarova made a number of solid forehand winners to edge back in front before wrapping up the match with a comfortable hold of serve.

The 17th seed will face either Aleksandra Krunic or Victoria Azarenka in the last eight.
