Number 21 seed Andy Roddick saw off the challenge from Michael Russell in four sets to earn himself a place in round two at Flushing Meadows.
Roddick, 28, took the first two sets with relative ease 6-2 6-4 before compatriot Russell hit back by taking the third set 6-4.
However, the 33-year-old failed to build upon that success and Roddick went on to win the next set 7-5 and move into the next round.
Another all-American clash awaits Roddick in the second round as he prepares to take on Jack Sock.
