Tommy Robredo defeats Nick Kyrgios to reach round four

Tommy Robredo advances to the fourth round of the US Open after rallying from a set down to defeat the dangerous Nick Kyrgios in four sets at Flushing Meadows.

Number 16 seed Tommy Robredo came from a set down to defeat Nick Kyrgios to advance to the fourth round of the US Open on Sunday.

Kyrgios began the match in imperious form and dominated the first set, breaking the Spaniard twice in the early stages to take a 5-0 lead which he converted into a 6-3 victory.

The Australian started the second in similar form, but this time his 32-year-old opponent managed to fight back with a series of impressive counter shots to the 19-year-old's power play to take the set 6-3.

The third set was evenly matched as both players managed to hold serve to take it into a tie-breaker, and Robredo showed his class to secure a 7-1 victory to put the pressure on Kyrgios, who claimed the famous scalp of Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon earlier this year.

An early break put the Spaniard on course to secure the match in the fourth set and he managed to serve out the set, recording a 6-3 victory to book his place in the next round of the competition.

Robredo will now face number three seed Stanislas Wawrinka in round four at Flushing Meadows.
