Eighth seed Angelique Kerber is through to the third round of Wimbledon but was forced to work hard for a 7-5 6-3 victory over Ekaterina Makarova.
The German was made to come from a break down to claim the first set after Makarova stole a game from her serve early in the opener.
However, Kerber recorded consecutive breaks of her own to move a set ahead before displaying a more assured performance in the second set.
A further break of serve at 4-3 gave Kerber the opportunity to serve for the match, which she did at the first attempt to secure her third-round berth.
Kerber will face American Christina McHale in the next round after she overcame the challenge of Mathilde Johansson.
