Spain finish on high with Russia scalp

Spain beat Russia 15-10 to finish their women's water polo campaign in seventh at the World Swimming Championships in Kazan.

Spain have finished seventh in the women's water polo event after beating host nation Russia 15-10 at the World Swimming Championship in Kazan this afternoon.

Four goals from Roser Tarrago and three from Laura Lopez helped Spain conclude their tournament on a high following defeats by China and USA in recent outings.

They led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter but a hat-trick from Evgeniya Ivanova restored the competitive element in the second as the Spaniards boasted a slender 8-7 lead at half time.

However, Spain raced into a 12-8 lead to wrest the match back from their Russian counterparts en route to the victory.

Later today, USA and the Netherlands go head to head in the gold-medal match, with Australia facing Italy in the earlier game to determine bronze.
