Disney+ announces UK price rise, launch of Star brand

Disney confirms that the price of the Disney+ service will rise by £2 a month in the UK from February, while the Star brand will be rolled out internationally.

Disney has confirmed that the UK subscription price for Disney+ will rise to £7.99 a month from February 23, 2021.

The streaming service launched in the UK in March this year with a price point of £5.99 a month - and although the price is rising by a third, it still compares favourably with rival services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Disney+ will continue to offer a discounted annual subscription rate of £79.99 from February 23, while in Ireland and other European markets the price will increase to €8.99 a month.

The news comes after Disney confirmed that Disney+ had smashed its subscriber target four years earlier than planned, with 86.8 million worldwide subscribers to date.

In addition, Disney has announced that the 'Star' brand will launch as part of Disney+ internationally from February 23, housing thousands of hours of TV and movies from Disney's studios including FX, Touchstone and 20th Television.

In recent months the company has been rebranding its FOX and FX-branded linear TV channels in select markets as Star - although at present it is unclear whether the FX channel in the UK will also be rebranded as Star.
