BBC drama chief: 'EastEnders won't dwell on coronavirus'

The BBC's head of drama suggests that EastEnders "may not dwell" on the issue of coronavirus when filming resumes.

The BBC's head of drama Piers Wenger has insisted that EastEnders "may not dwell" on the issue of coronavirus once the soap starts filming new episodes.

The show shut down production in mid-March, just before the UK entered lockdown, although the cast and crew are now due to return to work later this month.

ITV soap Emmerdale will be tackling the issue of COVID-19 head on with a series of 'lockdown' episodes airing from next week, but Wenger has suggested that EastEnders might not go that far.

"There will be social distancing and so on. But we may not dwell on the virus and make it the heart of the story. I'm unsure about that," he told Radio Times.

"I think people watch a show like EastEnders for the characters and their relationships, so COVID-19 will be there but it won't be the only thing happening in Albert Square."

Wenger's comments echo those of ITV counterpart John Whiston, who recently declared that his soaps would not "slavishly" be devoted to the pandemic.

Earlier today it was reported that EastEnders will drop off air in just two weeks' time when all existing episodes have been broadcast.
