Batwoman to have "new identity" after Ruby Rose exit

Details emerge of how Batwoman producers plan to replace Ruby Rose in the titular role for the superhero show's second season.

Batwoman will feature a new character in the title role for its second season following the shock departure of Ruby Rose from the series last month.

The actress is said to have come to a mutual agreement with the studio, Warner Bros, and the show's US network, The CW, to step down after just one season amid reports that she had struggled to adjust to the long filming hours required.

In the show Rose played Kate Kane, an out lesbian who takes up the mantle of defending Gotham years after her cousin Bruce Wayne (Batman) goes missing.

According to Decider, rather than recasting the role of Kane for season two, producers have opted to replace her with a new character called Ryan Wilder.

A casting notice says that producers are looking for an actress who is in her mid-20s and "any ethnicity", before going on to reveal more details about Wilder.

"She's likeable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She's also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her," the notice says. "With no-one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits.

"A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero."

The second season of Batwoman is expected to air from January 2021.
