New York Giants owner John Mara believes that the team will reach a deal with wide receiver Victor Cruz before the 2013 NFL season begins.

New York Giants owner John Mara has said he remains "pretty confident" that Victor Cruz will sign a new contract with the team.

Discussions to keep the wide receiver at the organisation have been ongoing throughout the off-season, with Cruz reportedly holding out for a $10m (£6.5m) salary.

Mara told NFL AM: I'm pretty confident that we'll end up reaching a deal with [Cruz]. This is not that atypical a situation. Player contracts, particularly with star players like Victor, can tend to drag on from time to time.

"I think we'll get it done. This is the right place for him to play. He's a star in this area, he's an important part of our team and I think we'll eventually get a deal done, but it's just a process that you have to go through.

"We're going through it right now. There's communication, and it's slow but steady, and I think at some point we'll reach a deal."

Head coach Tom Coughlin recently admitted that he is concerned that the discussions are taking so long.
