New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has insisted that he will be ready to start if chosen for their opening match of the regular season.
Smith has been competing with Mark Sanchez to be the franchise's number one quarterback throughout the off-season, with coach Rex Ryan giving away no clues as to who will get the job.
However, Sanchez picked up a shoulder injury during the Jets' most recent pre-season game which could hand the initiative to Smith, and the rookie believes that he is ready for the opportunity.
"Yes, I am [ready]. I've been working hard, extremely hard this off-season," Smith told reporters.
"[I'm] preparing myself to be a starter week one, and if I'm given the chance, I'll be prepared for it."
Smith threw one touchdown pass during his side's overtime win over the New York Giants on Saturday but also threw three interceptions and conceded a safety.
