Liverpool transfer news: Offers to be accepted for attacker in summer?

Liverpool are reportedly open to accepting offers for at least one of their regular attacking players during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool allegedly have plans to entertain offers for at least one of their regular attacking players during the summer transfer window.

The Merseyside giants have just endured their worst week of the campaign having been eliminated from the Champions League and lost to Newcastle United in Sunday's EFL Cup final.

Although Arne Slot's side remain 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, there is increasing concern over their development under the Dutchman.

That is particularly the case due to the ongoing contract situations involving Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, none of whom have committed their futures past the end of this season.

Furthermore, Liverpool have netted just three goals from open play in their last four games, highlighting an over-reliance on Salah who has not scored from open play since February 23.

Slot ready to act?

As per former scout Mick Brown, who was speaking to Football Insider, Liverpool are open to cashing in on Diogo Jota after his indifferent campaign.

In 18 starts and 11 substitute outings, the 28-year-old has contributed just eight goals and three assists, failing to score since January 14.

Commenting on the matter, Brown said: "One of their strengths has been that they've got five or six forwards, and any three of those could start on any given day.

"But I don't think Slot has been particularly happy with what those players are giving to him. Jota, I hear, has been particularly disappointing, and he's one they will look to move on.

"If they can bring in a decent fee for him, it will allow them to go and spend it on a replacement. I think clubs will be interested in him so perhaps there's a deal to be done."

Why Jota sale makes most sense

Having paid £45m for Jota in 2020, Liverpool have certainly gotten value for money for the Portugal international, who has 64 goals and 22 assists from his 174 appearances in all competitions.

However, since the start of 2022-23, he has failed to make more than 22 outings in the Premier League, nor has he scored more than 10 goals.

For a team of Liverpool's profile, and for someone who is more often than not used down the centre, the return needs to be greater if Liverpool are to progress.

While Darwin Nunez has hardly been a suitable alternative, the Uruguay international brings different qualities to the team.

Jota now seems at a point in his career where he may need to drop down a level to earn regular football. It is also worth pointing out that Jota has only ever netted five Champions League goals for Liverpool in 30 appearances.
