Jameis Winston rues costly interception off his first NFL pass

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston admits that he could not afford to throw an interception against the Tennessee Titans on his first NFL pass.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston has conceded that he put in a poor display on his NFL debut in his side's loss to the Tennessee Titans.

The first two picks in the 2015 Draft faced off at Raymond James Stadium as Winston played fellow rookie signal-caller Marcus Mariota, and he was forced to watch as the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner led the Titans to the first score of the game.

However, Winston's first pass in the NFL proved to be a disaster as he was intercepted by Coty Sensabaugh, who returned the ball for a touchdown. The AFC South side dominated the game as Mariota threw for four scores, while Winston struggled immensely in his side's 42-14 defeat.

"I can't turn it over on the first possession; that's just something for me to learn from," Winston told reporters.

"So I put us behind the eight-ball a little bit. But we bounced back. When we're playing Buccaneer football, we play well. Obviously, I've got to protect the football. But the guys played great; it was just a learning experience for me.

"It's just one game, that's the main thing. But for myself, like coach Lovie Smith preaches, you've got to win the turnover ratio and tonight I put us behind the eight-ball but we're going to bounce back."

The Buccaneers play the New Orleans Saints in their next outing.
