Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing for the acquisition of a new goalkeeper during the January transfer window due to the injury sustained by Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly prepared to sign a new goalkeeper in January following the news of a serious injury to Guglielmo Vicario.

The 28-year-old picked up the issue during Spurs' four-goal demolition of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Vicario managed to soldier through the entire match for the Lilywhites despite suffering a fracture in his ankle during the Etihad contest.

The Italian was sent for a scan on the issue the next day and the results showed that the shot-stopper had broken his ankle in the top-flight match.

After earning a standout victory on the blue side of Manchester, Spurs have moved up to sixth in the Premier League standings, just three points behind bitter rivals Arsenal in fourth.

Tottenham planning goalkeeping addition following Vicario blow?

According to The Standard, Tottenham's January transfer plans have shifted dramatically following news of a serious ankle injury for Vicario.

Undergoing surgery on his foot at the start of this week, the 28-year-old is not expected back in first-team action until the beginning of February.

Ange Postecoglou was supposedly planning to move for a younger alternative to Vicario in the summer transfer window, however the Australian's thoughts are said to have changed.

With the Italian potentially sidelined for an extended period, it is understood that Spurs could bring in a replacement keeper during the New Year.

The Lilywhites face 10 fixtures during a busy festive schedule before the winter trading point opens, including vital Premier League clashes with Chelsea and Liverpool.

Who will replace Vicario for now?

Pencilled in to be the backup option to Vicario for the entire campaign, 36-year-old Fraser Forster will need to step up for Spurs until they can sign another goalkeeper.

The veteran has only played three competitive matches for the Lilywhites so far this season, with two of those appearances arriving in the Europa League.

Forster is a certainty to start for Tottenham on Thursday night, when Italian giants Roma will be the visitors to North London for a battle in UEFA's second-tier club competition.
