Robert Griffin III is to undergo surgery to repair his LCL and explore whether there is damage to his ACL.

The Washington Redskins have confirmed that Robert Griffin III is undergoing surgery today to repair his damaged knee.

The rookie quarterback initially sprained the joint last month, but sustained further damage in the Redskins' 24-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

RG3 sought a second opinion on the injury yesterday, as an MRI scan on Monday was inconclusive.

Griffin's surgery will involve repairs to the lateral collateral ligament, while the surgeon will also inspect the anterior cruciate ligament, which may also be damaged.

RG3 previously tore his ACL while in college, making it difficult to determine further tears from an MRI.

Reports in America suggest that the quarterback could be out for six to eight months while recovering from the surgery.
