Syringes found in Commonwealth Games Village

The Commonwealth Games Federation launches a investigation into allegations of doping after needles were found in the Athletes' Village.

The Commonwealth Games Federation has launched an investigation into the possibility of doping taking place at the event after syringes were found in the Athletes' Village.

The Games officially get underway on the Gold Coast this Wednesday, but they are already threatening to be overshadowed by a doping scandal after a cleaner found needles where the athletes are residing throughout the competition.

It is as yet unclear which area of the Village the needles were found, whether they had been used and which nations are suspected of being involved, but Indian media has since suggested that their own team may be implicated.

There is a Village-wide needle ban in the area, and CGF chief executive David Grevemberg has promised a full investigation into the incident.

"We're going to work as expediently as possible, within the rights of our standard," Grevemberg said in a statement.

"We don't want athletes that are cheating on the field of play, or in the Games, and let's just make that very clear."

The 21st edition of the Games will run from Wednesday 4 to Sunday 15.
