The International Association of Athletics Federations has announced that the American city of Eugene will stage the World Championships in 2021.
For just the second time in its history, the IAAF opted against the normal bidding process by awarding the Oregon city the right to host the event as part of a "unique strategic opportunity" to develop the sport.
IAAF president Lamine Diack is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "In granting the championships to Eugene, the IAAF Council have made a clear choice on a strategic decision that enables us to take advantage of a unique opportunity that may never arise again.
"It will see public authorities, the private sector, the national Olympic Committee, NBC and a particularly enthusiastic public joining forces."
Boston have lodged a bid to host the Olympic Games in the United States in 2024.
