Rob McCracken: 'Anthony Joshua did well'

British boxing performance director Rob McCracken thinks that Anthony Joshua did well to beat Erislandy Savon.

Team GB's boxing performance director Rob McCracken has praised the performance of Anthony Joshua after the heavyweight beat Erislandy Savon earlier in the week.

Joshua moved into the quarter-finals with a tight 17-16 victory and will face reigning silver medallist Zhang Zhilei of China.

McCracken, who also trains world champion Carl Froch, was impressed with Joshua despite the heavyweight's inexperience.

"Anthony Joshua is still inexperienced, some would say an international novice - but a good novice," he told the Watford Observer.

"He is developing all the time. He learnt a lot from the last fight and I thought he did really well.

"I had a chat with him and he had a lot left in the tank, he wishes he had thrown a few more punches."

Joshua was still able to take a close win though, and McCracken knows another tough test lies in wait.

He continued: "It was a really close bout, he nicked it and it is a great achievement.

"He will now go on to box the Chinese silver medallist from Beijing. Expectations may get a bit high, but he has embraced it all. He believes in himself."

Joshua will face Zhang on Monday evening.
